Fredun De Vitre

Senior Counsel

Bombay High Court

Mr. De Vitre is a Senior Counsel at the Bombay High Court. He has been in active practice, largely in Civil matters, for the past 30 years. He has appeared in several arbitrations including foreign arbitrations under the International Chamber of Commerce, Paris.

In 1993, he was deputed by the International Commission of Jurists, Geneva as an "Observer" for the trial of the then East Timorese rebel leader Xanana Gusmao, (now the President of that country) in Dili, East Timor. He also participated in the conference on "Minority Rights" in Berlin, Germany in October 2000.

He studied at St. Stanislaus School, Bandra, St. Xavier's College, Mumbai and Government Law College, Mumbai. He was the winner of the prestigious Sir J.B. Kanga Gold Medal, the Judge Spencer Prize, the Sir Chimanlal Setalvad Prize and the Inverarity Prize for having stood First Class First in Bombay University at the LL.B. examinations in 1976.

He was awarded the Fr. Donnelly Prize for “Best Student” in School in 1969, the “Rotary Prize” for “Best Student” at St. Xaviers College in 1972 and the “Prof. Ranganath Rao” Prize for “Best Student” at the Government Law College in 1976.  In the 1990s he was a Professor of Law at the Government Law College, Mumbai. He was also the Honorary Secretary of the Bombay Bar Association for three years (1993-1996).

For some years, between 1969 and 1993, he was a commentator for cricket matches on television and has published a book, "Willow Tales – the Lighter Side of Indian Cricket."
